Your bow may be your advantage during gun season
As archery season gives way to gun season, most hunters will be putting down their bows in favor of a firearm. By far the most popular of all the deer seasons, thousands of hunters will put on their orange and head out in hopes of taking a deer. You archery hunters who have been used to being mostly alone will find yourselves just one hunter among a sea of orange.
What may have been a sweet spot could turn into a popular spot, causing the deer to avoid it like the plague. On public land allowing gun hunting, you may find yourself hunting a new spot away from everyone else rather than a nice 10 point buck. What can you do?
One option is to leave your gun at home and pick back up your bow and arrows. Many areas on public land are open to archery only and this just may be the hot spot you’re looking for as other hunters push the deer onto them. Since these areas will be largely ignored by gun hunters, they make an excellent spot for deer trying to escape hunting pressure and hunters willing to give up carrying a gun.
If you know of a spot open only to archery, check it out. If it’s near other public land, or even private land, where gun hunting is taking place, it’s a good bet you’ll find yourself alone in the woods once again. And as the hunting pressure increases, so will the likelihood of being in a good spot to take a nice deer even though thousands of other hunters are out there as well.
Give it a try and let me know how you fare. If you get a nice deer leave a picture for us all to see.
