Thoughts on the Outdoor Bloggers Summit
Yesterday I showcased three articles in the Blog Hunt dealing with the Outdoor Bloggers Convention, which appears to have taken on the name Outdoor Bloggers Summit after a recommendation by Othmar. That’s a good name, by the way. I like it. In a reply to it by Kristine, she said if I had any thoughts on it, to post them up, so that is what I will be doing today.
I believe that if this is going to happen, then it needs to happen no earlier than sometime in 2008, as others have stated. It takes time to put together something of this caliber so that it can be a success, and that is what we all would like to see happen with it. A get together for the panel, or any one wishing to help, at an earlier date to discuss and plan is a good idea though, so I say that should be a go.
Location wise, I do believe that will eventually be at least partially determined by any sponsors we can get to help move this thing from a nice concept to reality. I would love to see it happen in Michigan mostly because it is so for me since I am in central Ontario. A slightly more central location would probably be even better though, but any place could be a possibility, even with sponsors, if there are good enough arguments for it. For greedy and convenience reasons, I’m going to go ahead and give a thumbs up for Michigan as of now.
I think a good place to start with sponsors is with smaller companies within the outdoor industry. Ask for a small amount from each and rely on numbers to generate a higher funding amount. Although it would take support from many more of them than it would a couple of big sponsors, a chance to showcase their products at such an event may be a perfect incentive for them to help in pulling this thing off. It could basically be a Bloggers Convention and a SHOT type show rolled into one.
I wouldn’t expect anything huge from the first year or two, but I can see the Outdoor Bloggers Summit turning into quite an event. There are numerous blogging conventions and gatherings every year, but one specifically aimed at the Outdoor Blogger is one I’m not aware of. Eventually it could even draw in some of the Outdoor Writers that have their own conventions, because blogging and writing are two different things as of now, and with the increase in how many of them are starting blogs, they may like the focused attention to that medium.
Just some random thoughts, if I think of anything else, I’ll post it up as well.

Cliff,
You had some great ideas there. I think we’ve all come to an agreement that the earliest we could pull the first Summit together would be 2008. There’s simply too much to do to try and hold one any sooner.
Still a lot of details to work out, but I love that the conversation is starting to spread. Please keep the ideas coming.
