The Allure of Archery Hunting

Like many hunters probably have, I first started deer hunting using a gun. It wasn’t until I had been hunting for quite a few years that I picked up a bow and arrows. At first, it was just something different to do, but over the years, it has increasingly become my main method of hunting.

As much as I enjoy hunting with a rifle, I have even found myself leaving it behind during gun season in favor of my bow. Like many other times, I’ve recently found myself wondering why that is. Many people would say your chances are much better with a gun than with a bow, and at times I would have to agree. So what is it that draws me to using a bow instead of my rifle? What exactly is the allure of archery hunting?

I believe it can be partly attributed to the maturation process of a hunter. There is a point when the experience outweighs the kill, and if you want the experience, then nothing compares to hunting with a bow. It is the most up-close and personal form of hunting there is. And besides that, there are quite a few other benefits as well over gun hunting.

Archery seasons in most areas are quite a bit longer than gun seasons. There are also fewer hunters in the woods, partially contributed to the longer drawn out seasons. There are many areas only open to bow hunting, so you have more places to hunt. Landowners who are hesitant to allow gun hunting are usually more open to archery hunting. It also offers more of a challenge.

Those are just a few of the most evident benefits I could think of, the list could stretch on and on. And every one of them is part of the allure of archery hunting to me.

For you bowhunters out there, what is the allure of archery hunting for you?

The quietness, the challenge, the experience.the patience I love the feeling of becoming one with the deer.Having them so close, you can see their eyelashes, then never drawing, your bow.Watch as they walk away, never aware that you’re there.
Something hard to explain.Thats bowhunting to me.

There is nothing like walking into the woods with a bow. That mystical, and very spirtual experience can never be replaced. How many other times do you truely have a chance to be that close to nature! So awesome! Can’t wait for season.

By the way. Very cool site. I’m gonna add ya to my link list if ya don’t mind!

Your so right about archery hunting, I grow up with a bow in my hand. I live in Colorado and started my elk hunting with a rifle though, but because of the love of archery hunting my brother and I went back to the bow.
