Teaching an Old Hunter New Tricks
The Jim Zumbo fiasco and its aftermath has no doubt made a lot of people take things into consideration they hadn’t before. As I’ve watched the drama unfold over the last week, there has been one very common request of Mr. Zumbo from many non-hunting gun owners. ‘Never go back to hunting again and dedicate yourself to sport shooting and fighting for the Second Amendment.’ Not a direct quote, but paraphrasing the general jest of many comments that say that in one way or another.
I’ve thought about those comments all weekend, and the longer I think about them, the more they bother me. Not only are they unrealistic, they are very unfair coming from the people that are shouting them. Many of you may disagree, but let’s stop and take the time to really look at this from an unbiased point of view here.
People are in an uproar because of what was said by Jim Zumbo in his blog post. Those people, the ‘black-gun’ advocates as they are referred to, believe that his words very well could take away something they love, their AR-15’s and similar ‘military type’ weapons. They are fighting made, because something they have a passion for could be taken from them.
Yet, here they are, suggesting that the only thing that will make amends for what Zumbo did is for him to give up the very thing that put him in a position to be influential in the fight for the Second Amendment to begin with. His one passion that he was lucky enough not to only get to do for pleasure, but to make a living while doing: Hunting. It doesn’t make sense to me at all.
The man has lost his ability to make a living doing what he loves, is it really necessary for him to have to give up his passion all together to make people happy? An old hunter is willing to learn new tricks to make up for what he did, namely learning about and using ‘black-guns’ for hunting. Does he really have to only use them for shooting competitions and events instead of using them the way that he has used every other firearm he has used over the years to prove that he’s an advocate of that type of weapon?
Isn’t it better that Jim Zumbo take up using their beloved guns in a setting where they say that there is the most amount of controversy on them being accepted by members of their own kind, loyal gun owners? That is what makes the most sense to me. It shouldn’t matter how he uses the weapon, but rather that he is a supporter of it and all weapons, and that he supports the Second Amendment, that gives us the right to have any of those weapons we personally decide we want.
Anyway, that is something I’ve been thinking about over the weekend. What are others thoughts on it? Does anyone else find it as ironic as I do? Let me know what you think.
