Safari in Canada

Yesterday was a big day. It was a day filled with firsts for our four year old. Those are always awesome and very camera worthy, so I thought I would write about it today and share a few photos with everyone.

With the end of school just a week away, there is very little going on in the classrooms anymore. These last days are filled with fun activities and exciting field trips. For our youngest, the most excitement came yesterday when the junior kindergarten classes took a trip to a local zoo.

This was his first field trip, his first time riding a bus, and the first time at the zoo when old enough to remember it. All of these are big deals for such a little guy. The wife and I met the bus at the zoo and we had to smile as he bounced in the seat with a huge grin and waved at us through the window as they waited to unload.

As is to be expected with a four year old, there was more wanting to run ahead to see what was next than hanging around to look at what was already discovered. That made it hard to get a lot of pictures, but we managed a few. And for what is a small local zoo, I have to admit that they do have quite a selection of animals on display. From lizards, boa constrictors, and canadian geese to buffalo, tigers, lions, and giraffes, he made quick work of them all.

The petting zoo section, what we thought would be his favorite, was his least favorite area. The snakes and reptiles seemed to be where he spent the longest amount of time. He also was amazed by the giraffes, but he didn’t like how up close and personal it was with them. He enjoyed the exotic deer, but moved on fairly quickly to where the big cats were hanging out.

I was surprised to see the addition of tigers, and they even had a white one. They were both young, at just a year, but they still proved a lot bigger than the cat our son plays with at home. I think the actual size of the lions also surprised him, because Lion King just isn’t able to put the size of these beasts in perspective for the kiddies.

All in all, it was a fun day. Even though he was a bit spooked at being too close to many of the animals, and wanted to explore more than look at what he discovered, he had fun. Amazingly, with all the animals he saw, it seems the big exotic beast that made the biggest impact was the wild, untamed, yellow school bus. It was the only one he got to ride.
