Register to Hunt & Fish = Register to Vote
Missouri sportsmen who buy hunting and fishing license may soon find a voter registration form in their mailboxes. HB 845, which passed on a voice vote after nearly two hours of debate, would require the Secretary of State to send a voter registration card to anyone who buys a hunting or fishing license and who are not registered to vote. Before being sent to the Senate, it will still need to pass in the House one more time.
When I first stumbled across the article’s headline, I wondered what exactly was so bad about sending out a voter registration card. After reading it, I had some doubts of my own about it. What I find interesting is the fact that any changes or amendments to the bill were rejected. Even stranger was that a measure to amend the bill to include every student registering at a public college or university was ruled out of order. These amendments were proposed by Republicans and Democrats alike so party affiliation doesn’t seem to have played a part in this uncompromising stance.
Why are hunters and fisherman being singled out? Why were amendments to expand the list of people who received them rejected? I don’t know about you, but something smells fishy to me about this. I can’t put my finger on it, but maybe someone else can.
So, here’s the deal: Let’s have a discussion on this and see if we can uncover what’s going on here. There’s definitely more than meets the eye.
