“Open Season” on hunters

Finally watching “Open Season” is a given when you have three kids who love watching animated movies, never mind the fact that the wife and I enjoy watching them too. I have to admit, though, I was disappointed some with it. My wife says that it’s because I’m a hunter and biased against it. She may be right to an extent.
I’ve never been one unable to handle some fun jabs being poked at something I like or me for liking it. Even being a Redneck, I find myself laughing at Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck jokes. I found many of the jokes in “Open Season funny on some levels, but the underlying implications of how it will make people view hunters I found down right disturbing.
Hunters have to fight negative images and stereotypes all the time, we don’t need another movie re-enforcing them to a new generation yet again. Now not only are we the ones who shot “Bambi’s daddy, but we are the one’s after Elliot and Booga. That doesn’t include all the other movies out there that have talking animals in peril to some degree by hunters, like “Ice Age, “Brother Bear, along with many others.
While I truly believe the creators of these cartoons aren’t intentionally trying to spread an anti-hunting message, it is what their films are helping do. Maybe some day we’ll see a movie that actually portray hunters in a good light, although I don’t see it happening anytime soon when the main characters of the movies are animated animals kids fall in love with.
