Labor Day, End of Summer, and Hunting Season
Happy Labor Day, everyone!
This is the official, unofficial, end to summer. Amazing how fast it goes, isn’t it? Here in the Great White North, you can already feel a crispness in the air and see the leaves slowly beginning to change from green to shades of yellow, red, and orange. All a sure sign that fall is on it’s way, and right behind it, tons of the white stuff.
Each morning, when I walk outside, the cool air tickles my brain and I can’t help but think about hunting. Isn’t it funny how the brain makes the connection between things like cooler weather and hunting season? And now, I find myself with an overwhelming desire to set aside all that still needs to be done before the weather turns bad so I can take out my bow and shoot for hours on end before heading to the woods to do some scouting.
And I know I’m not the only one experiencing this. Hunters from all over are hearing the same call being whispered on the wind. And for those who haven’t already answered it, whether from taking advantage of numerous early hunting opportunities or practicing and scouting, it will begin to gnaw at the edge of their consciousness until the urge is too great to resist any longer.
I’m not sure how great this urge is for retailers in general, but there’s no doubt they are very well aware of it. The summer patio furniture, swimming pools, and barbecue grills will find themselves in the clearance section now that Labor Day is here, and soon gone, making room for camouflage clothing, bows, arrows, deer calls, and scents.
With all of the above, I have a hard time looking at Labor Day as the end of summer, like so many may. Instead, I look at it as a beginning. A beginning to being able to once again become one with nature and take part in a yearly ritual that has taken place for thousands of years.

You are absolutely killing me with this post. We had temps down into the 40s around here and those thoughts automatically started hitting me as I let the dog out one morning. I just can’t wait for season. WOOHOOO!
