Hunting Jumping Fish
I have to say, this could be a case of fishing being hunting, but shhh, don’t tell the wife since that is an ongoing debate.
Seriously, though, I have to admit the action in this video is somewhat exciting. There are some really good shots they make. Couple the fish jumping with the moving boat and it’s even more impressive.
I’ve done some bowfishing myself, but it was mainly for gar. It’s a challenging sport that provides an alternative way to practice with your bow. That said, I do want to clarify that when I did it, any gar I got was given to my grandparents who used it, so it didn’t go to waste. To me, if it is done for just pure thrill and the fish is just killed and not used, it is something that doesn’t fall within my ethics.
What does bother me though is the fact that this video does little to change the stereotypical perception of hunters many people have. It makes it look like the idea is more about shooting and killing something for the fun of it than anything else. Some people may disagree with me, but so be it because that is how I see it.
I hope that anyone who actually does fish with their bows at least considers donating any fish they get to a food bank or giving them to someone who will use them. I don’t remember it off hand, but I do know that there is a recipe for canning gar that my grandmother used all the time. I’ll have to do some asking and see if I can’t find it to post up.
