Hunting Hometown Heroes

Photos of local hunters and their kills in newspapers are probably familiar to those of you who live in smaller towns. Growing up, I remember anxiously waiting for the paper to see pictures of deer harvested and if I knew the hunters who got them. In a way, those hunters who appeared within those black and white, ink-filled pages seemed like hometown hunting heroes.

You can still find them today, but as hunting and hunters become less fashionable, so does the printing of pictures of them and their kills. Especially in larger papers. So this is what I would like to do.

With the beginning of hunting seasons already, or soon to be, starting all over, Hunting Sense will be hunting hometown heroes. If you have a photo of you and your kill, I want to post it for the world to see. But there are a few minor guidelines I ask that you try to abide by.

1. All photos must be PG rated. No shoes, no shirt, no service.
2. The photos must only be of yourself or of someone of which you have permission from to send the photo.
3. All photos must be tasteful. Yes, it’s a dead animal, but you don’t have to have a picture of the animal covered in blood, it’s tongue hanging out, and you sitting astride it’s back.
4. Photos can be submitted by utilizing the Contact Me option on the right hand side of the site, right below the About Hunting Sense section.
5. By choosing to send Hunting Sense your photo, you are giving full permission for your photo to be posted here on the Hunting Sense website.

I’ll be making a new category especially for the posting of photos I receive of you and your kill and will begin posting them as soon as I begin receiving them.

An awesome idea. In my local city, population about 11,000, deer kills are still actually printed in the paper. I hope that day never goes away.

Great idea! Now if I can get a photo to post.

  6. darrell Says:

great idea! I’m glad I live in an area where the papers still post hunting pictures.

It will be neat to see all of your photos! This is a great idea. I grew up in a semi-rural town, and hometown heroes were in ever Sunday paper!!!

  8. Jon Says:

Great idea! Our locally owned newspapers in the Texas hill country regularly publish photos of hunters and their kills. It is hard to find them in the Houston, Austin or San Antonio papers, especially those owned by Scripps-Howard!

  9. Cliff Says:

Thanks for the support of this idea, everyone. I have to say I really like it and am looking forward to posting up the pics if and when they start coming in.
