Hunting Evergreens
As nearly everyone knows evergreens are excellent windbreaks. Even wildlife are well aware of this fact, seeking out the shelter the trees offer when the wind gets bad and the weather gets nasty. This provides hunters willing to take up the challenge of hunting evergreen stand an excellent opportunity to take advantage of less than favorable hunting conditions.
There are several obstacles to overcome when hunting in evergreens, but if you can work within the limitations, they aren’t insurmountable. Some of them stem from the thick foliage, which is exactly what provides animals with the protection from the weather that draws them to these locations. Things like limited shooting lanes, shorter fields of vision, and limitations on the use of tree stands. All of these may be challenging, but like I said, able to be overcome.
Knowing the movement of animals within the evergreen stands can help you be in the right spot for an up close shot. The thickness of the boughs provides an excellent way to make a blind. The natural scent of the needles when broken help in covering any stray scents that may spook an animal.
Also, many hunters stray away from hunting within these stands because of these limitations, so you may find yourself enjoying a private hunting advantage. It also puts you in the woods when other hunters may decide to stay home because of the weather. Anything that puts you where other hunters aren’t is a plus.
So, instead of skirting by evergreen stands next time you’re in the woods, consider the possibilities within them.
