Heated Over Hunting Scents

by Cliff

There’s no denying that heat intensifies odor. My wife can verify that when I come home after sweating all day. Seriously, though, think about it. Nearly anything with an odor that is heated will end up smelling a lot stronger than it does cold, right? Carrying over from my post on cover scents, I thought heated scents for hunting could be an interesting topic.

From heated wicks to incense sticks for hunting, turning the heat up on hunting scents has been around for a while. I even remember reading about a hunter who used a can of sterno fuel to heat up a can filled with Tink’s 69. Like many other methods, though, the results and success of these heated scents vary depending on who is doing the telling.

I’ve been thinking about giving some of these methods a try, although, I have to admit I’ve already tried the Tink’s 69 and Sterno trick… It didn’t work for me. The logic behind the concept is sound, though. But like most things, if I can brew up my own version, I’ll do that before going out and buying what is on the market.

If I’m not able to find non-scented incense sticks, there is always punks (for lighting fireworks) that are essentially the same thing. I’ll try dipping them in a few different deer lures and see what happens. There is also the option of taking up scented candle making. They may not be the scent the wife likes, but maybe I could come across one the deer do.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. I’ll have to give a few of these a try and post the results here on Hunting Sense. If it works out at a reasonably cheap price and is effective in the woods, craft stores may just see an influx of hunters in camo wanting to take up candle and incense making.
