Harvick Wins Daytona 500

Staying true to the typical Redneck stereotype, I love NASCAR nearly as much as I do hunting. And being a Kevin Harvick fan, the Daytona 500 weekend was pure bliss. Not only did Harvick win the Busch Series race on Saturday, but he also pulled off a spectacular .02 second finish Sunday to win the Nextel Cup Daytona 500 to make a clean sweep for him and Richard Childress Racing.
I’ve been a Kevin Harvick fan since he proved himself after taking over for Dale Earnhardt and the #3 car after Earnhardt’s death at Daytona in 2001. I had my reservations about him, but the way he handled the pressure of being in the spotlight and under constant scrutiny because of the legend he replaced, Harvick won me over. And after the strong showing he had during the 2006 season, his 2007 Daytona wins is proof that he is a serious Championship contender.
The Sunday Daytona 500 proved to live up to it’s hype as the most exciting race of the year. Known as the race where the ‘big one’ is always looming, just waiting to happen, there were plenty of wrecks in the 202 lap race (the two extra laps being a result of those wrecks). The last fifty laps were a series of stop and go shoot-outs as drivers found themselves in the middle of pile-ups typical during the last laps of the ‘Super Bowl’ event for NASCAR.
With such a great start to the season, for both Harvick and NASCAR in general, this looks to be an exciting season for me and many other fans this year.
