Hallowe’en Tragedy Averted - From the Wife

On November 10th, The Washington Post reported a sad case of a young deer whose curiosity almost got the better of him/her.
The poor thing had apparently been visiting a local gated community when it got tangled up in a child’s plastic pumpkin. It appears the handle had gotten looped over its horn-buds or ears, and the poor creature had been stuck like this for at least 6 days–threatening its life from starvation and dehydration. Officials were unsuccessful in getting close enough to tranquilize the young deer, but intended to keep trying.
Luckily, ABC News reported on November 11th that the youngster escaped by the skin of its nose…literally. Apparently after the unsuccessful attempt to free the deer, two children found the bucket in their yard, fur-lined and dented. Other witnesses say they saw a thin deer running free, as well.
I’m not sure this could have been completely predicted, and I’m sure that young deer will be more wary of sticking its snoot into unknown items and maybe curb its curiosity a bit, but it does show how deep our impact on the animal world goes. I’m sure glad this little fella made it out alright, but I have to wonder how many others haven’t. I know we can’t completely wipe out these types of unfortunate accidents, but I know I’ll be thinking twice before putting up any decorations.
