From the Wife - “Yuh-huh! Fishing Is So Hunting!”

This is a discussion Cliff and I have had several times. I maintain that fishing is a form of hunting. He says they are two different things. So, here is my perspective on it:
You decide to go fishing. You could randomly pick a spot, drop in your line and hope you get a nibble. And you could by chance catch a fish. You could also randomly walk into the woods, set up a treestand and hope a deer walks by. But [I'm guessing] more often than not, there is planning involved in both activities. You learn the habits of your prey, where they’re likely to be, what will attract them, etc., with both activities. Both take patience, skill, and a modicum of luck. And in the end, the concept is the same, [hopefully] — to kill something for consumption…or possibly display (you mount a deer with pride; you mount a big-assed fish with pride). The best times for both activities seem to coincide, as well.
So what exactly makes these two activities so different? To me, it’s like saying eating ice cream from a bowl is an entirely different activity than eating ice cream from a cone. While the methods are different, in the end, you’re still eating ice cream.
Cliff’s argument is you don’t see people out with rifles shooting into lakes and rivers. Putting aside hillbilly hunting for a moment…duh! His other [admittedly weak] argument is you ‘hunt’ animals, and you ‘catch’ fish. You don’t ‘catch’ animals, and when you do, it’s called ‘trapping’. Which leaves me with, “So, it’s a case of semantics?’ To be fair to Cliff, I have a tendency to…how to say…argue a point until he’s totally confused and can’t tell which way is up.
So here’s your challenge: Convince me [with logic] that hunting and fishing are two different entities. By ‘with logic’ I mean, don’t just tell me they are. Show me how they are. But be warned, this has been discussed ad nauseum in our house, and I’m betting any argument you’ll make, I’ll be able to [logically] counter it. Think you’re up to the challenge? Prove it.
If you can do it, I’ll openly admit I am wrong and dedicate a post to it.
(Oh, and if no one does, I’ll also dedicate a post to gloating with victory! C’mon, help Cliff out!)

Cliff, you better take up golf.
do not get in an argument about hunting or fishing with your better half. You will lose every time (as you know).

I never really thought about it, but I can see the logic behind your argument that “fishing” and “hunting” are essentially words for the same activity.
So, I guess I won’t be the one to disagree with you. Sorry.

Read with intrest, you post. Now you knoiw I am an avid hunter, but hey Fishing I love too.
So lets say, both could be some alike. When
hunting,You camo up,or dress for gun season.Fishing, anything will do,Myself,I look for a deer, choose the one to shoot,But
fishing,is kinda like a blind date, you never know what you’ll get. You bait up,cast your line, and wait, and wait, you cant see what is there, unlike my deer coming in to my stand.
Really I have been told, fish is just like one jerk, waiting on another.
So thats,my thought,But if you still think, hunting and fishing are the same,I suspose fishing, could be the brown
bag special,at the local food store,
Wont find deer there. When your fishing, you
can through it back, once you release,a bullet
or an arrow ,If you get it,you cant throw
it back.
But you are still the best,no questions asked
Be watching for a reply post.Did you understand, this red neck Mom,
Love Ya
Dont know who we helped

Don’t gloat yet! I don’t pull a boat when I go hunting. I don’t have a depth finder to help locate structure and fish when I go hunting. I can always throw the fish back if I’m not going to eat ‘em. And, fried fish with jalapeno tartar sauce is hard to beat!
