Float Your Way to Happy Hunting Grounds

by

I’m always looking for ways to get some scouting in, whether it’s on land I hunt or looking for new locations. From camping trips to hiking expeditions, I’ll take whatever opportunity that comes along to check out the game in a location. Summertime and hitting the water provides yet another way to do just that.

Lakes, rivers, and streams are often surrounded by either public land or private land ideal for hunting. Boating, floating, canoeing, and rafting provide you with the chance to find and check out some of these spots. Often times without ever leaving the water.

With a little research using maps from various sources (like wildlife departments or county and town governments), you can watch for deer and other wild game when your on the water and then find out how to access the location from the land. You can determine whether it’s public or private, who the owner is if it is private so you can seek permission to hunt, and what other type of property surrounds it.

There are also some pieces of public land open for hunting that is only accessible by water. Depending on how far it is from an available boat launch, it could provide some very private hunting on very public land simply because of the effort it takes to get to it. And we all know; the more remote it is, the better the chance of finding big bucks.

So this summer, when you’re out having fun on the water, keep in mind it may be an excellent time to find your next happy hunting grounds.
