Donate a light, Reward a child

The UKC (United Kennel Club) is asking coon hunters and clubs to ‘Invest in our future‘. What’s it all about? Help in providing a new coon hunting light as a prize for all kids who place in the UKC Youth National Coonhound Championship hunt and the six category winners in the show.
Is it a worthwhile cause? Of course it is. We see fewer children hunting in general every year, and those who actually participate in coon hunting even more so. Wouldn’t making sure they win something like a brand new hunting light for their accomplishments in the sport be a nice gesture to show how much we enjoy them taking part? I think so.
I remember hunting with a good friend who had three kids, all of which were very active in coon hunting. My brother and I also took two of our cousins who were much younger than us (I believe eight or nine years old at the time) out hunting with us. It was a wonderful experience watching them fall in love with the sound of a dog hitting a trail and treeing ol’ Mr. Ringtail.
A very common phrase among hunters is ‘Take you kids hunting so you aren’t hunting for your kids’. Well, I for one believe that introducing a child to and nurturing the love of coon hunting extends that phrase even further. Regular hunting keeps them off the street and getting into trouble during the day, and coon hunting does the same thing at night. It’s a one two punch.
So, if you have the means to do so, I urge all you coon hunters out there to check out the link I provided. And if your able to do so, invest in not only coon hunting’s future, but the future of our young coon hunters as well.
