CSI: New York Rant

I know I’ve ranted about these sort of things before, but I have to do it again after watching the newest CSI: New York episode, Down the Rabbit Hole.

During the course of the investigation, they discover a tick on the victim and assume she got it from her killer. What’s the first thing that pops out of their mouths? You got it, the killer must be a hunter!

No, it couldn’t be that it was someone out hiking, camping, nature watching, cleaning the back yard, or any other type of person or activity that may have been reasonable for a person to get a tick on them. Nope, it had to be a hunter. I don’t know about any one else, but little things like that bug the hell out of me.

Maybe there wasn’t anything more to it than simple writing, but, to me, it says a lot about the writers attitude toward hunters. Newsflash! Just because we pick up a weapon and go out into the woods to kill an animal doesn’t make us more likely to be a killer of people. If anything, it makes the majority of us respect life even more.

I know that it was just a show, but media in all its different forms is what shapes the conceptions and thoughts of the populace. In a perfect world, something so minor wouldn’t have a significant impact, but that isn’t the case. This little bits of stereotyping and prejudiced comments have a way of worming their way into the everyday thoughts of people.

All in all, I would have been much less upset if they would have stated the killer must have been someone who was in the outdoors, other than automatically presuming it had to be a hunter.

Ok, the rant is over. Sorry, but I had to get that off of my chest.

I recorded this episode but haven’t seen it yet.

It is interesting how hunters and gun owners (who aren’t cops or spies) are portrayed on television. One of the most intersting things I’ve seen so far this season is on the show “Las Vegas”. Tom Selleck joined the cast this season, and his character carries a gun. He’s just a citizen with a concealed carry permit, not a cop or a spy. They don’t make a big deal about it, but the show has made sure we know he carries a gun. Since I know Selleck is a big NRA supporter, I thought that was kind of interesting.

Ahhhh….Hollywood. So demented. I know what you’re saying, but honestly they do the same things involving many professions. I work in the computer industry and have noticed many facts on the show (computer related) that weren’t even close to being accurate.

I totally understand where you are coming from though. Trust me. It is a fight we go through everyday as hunters.
