A Boomstick for Your Hunting Stories

muzzleloader.jpg

Outdoorsmen love to tell stories, and Buckmasters knows it. The best part is, they are going to award you for sharing them. That’s right; you could win a brand new Thompson/Center Omega Z5 .50 caliber muzzleloader valued at over $500 for doing what you already do, sharing your hunting stories with others! How sweet is that?

I know I have a ton of stories I could share, but, unfortunately, being in Canada I’m not eligible. But for all you hunters out there in the US, what are you waiting for? I know I’m going to be passing this along to my family down in Oklahoma.

International Youth Hunter Education Challenge

Monday, June 4th, 2007

It’s no secret that I believe schools should offer a gun safety course of some kind to our children so they have the proper exposure and training in handling firearms. I’ve written many times about it here at Hunting Sense as many of you may already know. Well, today I stumbled across an article that touches on one such program.

Hunting Sense ‘Teaching Them to Survive’ Comment

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

I received a comment yesterday on the Teaching Them to Survive post from a week or two back and just had to share it.

I am a teacher and a blogger. I enjoyed reading your blog entry and have gotten inspired. I want to quote you on my blog so I can talk about this problem as well. I also want to take your advice and start giving the kids at what then… journal entry at least once a week to write on. I never thought of using journal in a problem solving sense before but I think it could just work.

Thanks,

Chase

Tagtropolis.com: Tagging the Outdoors

It’s no secret that social networking and bookmarking is popular right now, and for good reasons. Never has it been so easy to connect with people who share common interests as yourself and with friends. And as the popularity of such sites increase, the way internet surfers search for and find information and news relevant to them and their interests do as well.

New Insights into Hunting

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

An article in the Deseret News proves there are still new things to learn about hunting. The research and findings of the National Shooting Sports Foundation is quite interesting. Although, if your spouse sees the part about how much you spend for hunting over a lifetime, you may wish you had found out.

I’m not sure if that amount would apply to me. It most likely comes close, but spending nearly $18,000 over a lifetime seems rather extreme. I realize I spend money on hunting and hunting related products, but I doubt I spend as much as most of the people the survey consider being the average.

I have always been taught to make the most with the least amount of extras as possible. No wasting of ammunition, no unneeded gadgetry to weigh things down, and things like that. That seems like where a lot of the costs would be incurred. Who knows though?

A Family Tradition

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

My mom left this comment here on Hunting Sense yesterday and I wanted to make a post of it so more people could read it. I’m very proud of my cousin for the great young man and hunter he’s growing up to be. And I’m happy that my mom, the person who taught me to hunt and be the man I am, is doing the same for him. Thank you, Mom, for this and all the wonderful memories you’ve given me over the years.

Cliff
Yesterday I took my 13 year old nephew and your cousin deer hunting.
He didnt get a monster, just a doe. But I can tell you the thrill of seeing this young man get his deer was so awesome.
He told me, “I am helping put food on the table for Dad and me.”

He has learned to be a responsible hunter and knows you dont take an animals life as a light thing.
I was so proud to be a part of that hunt and see the look on his face. Tears in his eyes when he was stroking his deer, thanking her for the food.

Made me think of you and your brother and our many hunts,
Thanks for the memories.

Women Hunters on the Rise

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

When you hear so often about hunter numbers decreasing, it’s always nice to hear there are new hunters going afield. That was the case with me when I read this article about female hunters increasing.

Since my mother is a hunter, I’ve never had a problem with female hunters and have hunted with many of them over the years. I’ve always felt that if more women gave it a chance, they would find they actually enjoyed it just as much as men. Now with a 72% increase in five years to 3.4 million American women hunting, I think I was right.

One of the reasons for the increase is because hunting is becoming more acceptable of women. Once a man’s sport, females feel more welcome and the trend needs to continue. Many states offer programs of some sort for women who wish to go afield, companies are targeting merchandise for female hunters, and more females are writing about hunting. These all help in drawing in female hunters.

This is a trend that I, for one, am glad to see.

Disabled Boy Experiences Hunt of a Lifetime

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

Boy with both legs amputated bags his first bear on hunt to Maine.  Mathew was born with spina bifida and had his legs amputated two years ago.  Never letting his condition hold him back, he applied for a hunt with Hunt Of A Lifetime, a non-profit organization who helps fullfill the dreams of children with life-altering or terminal illnesses.

Mathew’s bear weighed in at 200 pounds and put him ahead of his stepfather, who has never killed one.  His grandfather was along for the hunt as well and captured it on film.

Mathew is an inspiration and Hunt Of A Lifetime is to be commended for the work they do.  Congratulatiuons Matt and great job!

I’ll be writing more about the Hunt Of A Lifetime organization in another entry, but if you want to learn more about them now you can visit their website at: http://www.huntofalifetime.org/index.shtml.
