The Politically Incorrect Guide to Hunting

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

As I previously mentioned, I’ve been reading ‘The Politically Incorrect Guide to Hunting‘ by Frank Miniter, and I’ve recently finished it. I have to say I am awfully impressed with the amount of facts presented in it. Facts that, like the book says, the media fail to report when they talk about hunting. And they are actual facts, easily verified with little research; not just the opinions of someone who enjoys hunting.

Weekend Warrior Outdoors Founder Writes In

Monday, February 5th, 2007

I recently did a post on a website I ran across called Weekend Warrior Outdoors. Over the weekend one of the founders, David Knupp, read it and sent me a reply. Although I still believe the membership fee is high, his reasoning for it makes sense. I know his email has increased my interest in his company and venture, and I’ll be watching how it progresses. I wish him luck with it.

Here’s what he said:

$100 to possibly be on a DVD?

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

It’s simply amazing the things that you can run across when browsing the net. My latest find is ‘Weekend Warrior Outdoors‘, a company that produces hunting DVD’s with footage submitted by you, the hunter. Sure, having your hunt included on a retail DVD available to the masses sounds awesome, but what about the $100 membership fee that goes along with it?

Yeah, that’s what I thought too.

After discovering the site, I did a little digging to see what I could find out about the company. A simple Whois search revealed that the domain is roughly five months old, registered in August of 2006. A Google search also showed that David Knupp, a co-founder, is a member of the field staff at TheHuntZone.com. and provided a few references to co-founder Cory Ouellette in outdoor related topics.

Where the Red Fern Grows

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Heralded as an all-time classic, Where the Red Fern Grows is a story of love, adventure, and friendship that appeals to the masses. Although normally considered a childrens book, the young and old alike will be captivated by Billy, Old Dan, and Little Ann and their adventures through the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma during the depression. And if anyone has a dry eye by the end of the book, I would have to question whether they have a heart or not.

Here’s a brief rundown of the story as listed at Amazon.com.

Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Summer of the Monkeys. In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy and his precious coonhound pups romp relentlessly through the Ozarks, trying to “tree” the elusive raccoon. In time, the inseparable trio wins the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, captures the wily ghost coon, and bravely fights with a mountain lion. When the victory over the mountain lion turns to tragedy, Billy grieves, but learns the beautiful old Native American legend of the sacred red fern that grows over the graves of his dogs. This unforgettable classic belongs on every child’s bookshelf.

The book impacted me the first time it was read to me in elementary school and continues to do so each time I reread it. It taught me many lessons and instilled in me a love for hounds and coon hunting that I was able to pursue when I grew older. And now, Billy and his adventures throughout the book make me think of my grandpa and the stories he told me about when he was growing up.

Anyone will love this book, but I believe coon hunters will feel a kinship with Billy about his dogs that few others will ever know or be able to understand.

Where the Red Fern Grows was also made into a movie that captures the very essence of the book and is as much of a must see as the book is a must read.

Rarely will I rate anything this high, but Where the Red Fern Grows deserves it and more, so I give it…

Dreams of Caribou

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

For anyone who has dreams of caribou and hunting in Shefferville Quebec, caribou capital of the world, Caribou Odyssey is a must see video.

Documenting three years of hunting the Quebec Labrador Caribou, this video is responsible for kindling within me the desire to hunt this magnificent animal. Not only are there 8 bulls taken on film, three with rifle and five with bow, but the history of the Quebec Labrador Caribou and their migration patterns are covered as well.

This is a highly recommended watch for anyone wishing to learn more about Caribou or thinking about making a trip to hunt them.
