Bill Richardson - A Real Hunting Presidential Candidate?
After the Mitt Romney debacle, it is surprising to see another Presidential candidate brave enough to claim to being a hunter. But that is exactly what New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is doing. Unlike Romney, though, he has some proof to back up his claims.
Officially entering the 2008 presidential election race on May 21st, Richardson doesn’t claim to be a lifelong hunter but instead states that; “I would call myself a recreational hunter. I am not an avid hunter or an expert hunter.” Since taking office as Governor in 2003, he has purchased a hunting license every year and is substantiated by New Mexico Game and Fish Department records.
Although Richardson says he prefers hunting birds, he has successfully hunted for elk and exotics. He cites impatience as the reasoning behind this preference. This is also evident in his owning a 12-gauge Browning over-and-under shotgun while borrowing rifles. His pro-gun stance outside of hunting is also evident by the fact that he also owns a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol and has a state permit to carry it concealed.
He is proud of his western heritage and it is apparent in his campaign ads.
The Western images fill a new television ad, introduced last week and airing in Iowa and New Hampshire that focuses on Richardson’s energy policies. The ad opens with New Mexico landscapes and includes scenes of Richardson hunting with two other people and riding horses with his wife, Barbara.
As for his record to prove his pro-gun/pro-hunting stance:
While a congressman, the Democrat voted against a ban on assault weapons and opposed a seven-day waiting period for handgun purchases. As governor, he backed and signed legislation allowing New Mexicans to carry concealed weapons.
It will be interesting to see the support he can garner for his Presidential Election run. I suggest everyone at least check him out and then form their opinions accordingly.

Hopefully, after Romney, any other candidates that claim they are hunters will be smart enough to back that claim up.
It seems, at first glance anyway, that this guy might be legitimate in his claim. Could be interesting to see what happens.
