Be Aware of Your Terrain While Hunting
When we think about safety while hunting, what normally comes to mind? Weapon safety? Treestand safety? Both of these springs to mind immediately for me, but there is another that is equally as important. What is it, you ask? Safely venturing into your hunting terrain and making it back out in one piece.
That may not sound like such a huge feat, but it can become one very easily for those who fail to respect Mother Nature and how unforgiving she can be. Sometimes we can forget that, especially when we have hunted in the same woods for years. But no matter how familiar we are with an area, we can’t afford to let our guard down.
Rocky trails along a bluff can become slick with the least amount of rain, making a one way trip down a likelihood for anything other than a mountain goat. River and stream banks can give way beneath your feet from the onslaught of rapid moving water. Stream beds once familiar and safe for crossing can become washed out and be deeper than you remember.
All it takes is one moment of carelessness and Mother Nature can make you remember exactly why you should respect her. And, if you’re lucky enough to survive making the mistake once, it is something you shouldn’t do again when you venture afield the next time. Enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and the excitement of the hunt, but make sure that you pay attention so you’ll be able to keep doing so.
