5 Ways to Scout on a Family Outing

It’s really hard to find time to do scouting sometimes when you need to be doing activities with the family instead. With time at a premium for most of us, and wanting home life to be a fun experience, it’s often times scouting that gets put on the backburner for another time. But what if you could do both?
Here are some ways to plan a fun family outing that will allow you to get in some much needed scouting at the same time. Whether you let your other-half know that this is what you’re doing is up to you, and I can’t be held responsible for any backlash that may be caused from it.
A Family Hiking Trip
Offer to take the family out for a hiking trip. Just make sure it’s where you want to do some scouting. You can make the hike as short or as long as you want depending on the families enthusiasm and how many spots you want to explore.
Wildlife Watching
What kids don’t like to see animals out in the wild. If you want to watch a hot spot you know about to determine movement patterns and such, take the family out for some ‘wildlife watching’. They get to see the animals, you get the info you want. It’s a win-win situation.
Fishing
If you want to hunt near water and need to find out when and where the animals are coming in to drink, take the family fishing. As you move up, down or around the water source, you can check for tracks and maybe even see the animals coming in to drink.
Camping
While you may have to throw in the at least one of the activities above to accomplish any scouting, taking the family camping is a good way to get some scouting in as well. It works even better if it’s billed as primitive camping and you get to do it right down close to where you want to hunt.
A Nature Hunt
Here’s a good educational experience for the kids and a good way for you to get actual help with finding sign. Take the family out on a nature hunt and have them search for tracks, rubs, trails, and other type of sign that will teach them something and gather much needed hunting info for you at the same time.
These are just a few ways scouting can be done while including the entire family for a fun, exciting family outing. I’m sure there are an unlimited number of ways you yourself can come up with to accomplish this based on what activities you and your family enjoy. Be creative, and get your scouting done without getting in trouble for leaving the family home alone. And if they are really good, share them here so the rest of us can benefit from your ingenuity and cleverness.
