Cougars and Bears – Oh My!

Friday, November 30th, 2007

bigcat.jpg

I’ve written before about seeing big cats in North-Eastern Oklahoma. But if you ask the normal, every day person, they’ll likely laugh at you or think that you’re crazy. And if you’re brave enough to say that you’ve seen a bear, prepare for an even bigger laugh. But it’s true.

Snow in the Great White North

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Canada is known as The Great White North for a reason. That reason is snow. And the last couple of days, it has been living up to its nickname. The snow has been coming down steady and everything is turning into a winter wonderland.

Outdoor bloggers are great

When I first started this blog, I had a lot of plans for it. Being a writer, I had the same excitement for it as I do when I begin a new story. But, like it is with writing long stories, the excitement starts to fade, it gets harder to keep writing, and you wonder if you should have ever started it in the first place.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Hunting

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

pigdh.jpg

As I previously mentioned, I’ve been reading ‘The Politically Incorrect Guide to Hunting‘ by Frank Miniter, and I’ve recently finished it. I have to say I am awfully impressed with the amount of facts presented in it. Facts that, like the book says, the media fail to report when they talk about hunting. And they are actual facts, easily verified with little research; not just the opinions of someone who enjoys hunting.

Humans are predators, Not just hunters

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

predators.jpg

In the animal world, its eaten or be eaten, the hunters are doing what mother nature would be doing if we hadn’t removed all the natural predators. Now, it is up to us to do the job.

I ran across the above quote while reading a response to an opinion piece on hunting in a newspaper. As you can tell, it is in support of hunting, not against. And it is a sound argument, even one that I have found myself using from time to time. But after reading it, it got me to thinking.

There are a few things about this argument, as stated here, that are a bit off, and seem to be quite often. First, all the natural predators haven’t been removed. What is more accurate is that we have reduced the number of natural predators to the point that they are no longer effective in naturally controlling the population.

The Last Hunt - Part 3

He heard Jacob laugh.

“So you’ve always been stubborn?”

Josh chuckled.

“Damn right, I have. Sometimes it’s a good thing, other times it ain’t. That one it was, cause I wanted to prove myself to my dad. Prove to him that he hadn’t made a mistake and that I was big enough to go hunting with him on a regular basis.” He looked over at Jacob. “You ain’t got much room to talk, though. You’re every bit as stubborn as me.”

“You got me there, Grandpa, I must have got it from you.”

The Last Hunt - Part 2

Coonhunting.jpg

Josh watched the young man, who continued to look out over the top of the trees in the bottoms below where they sat. So many years had passed by so quickly. It seemed just like yesterday that he had cradled the strapping young man in his arms as a newborn. Eighteen years gone in the blink of an eye. But at times, it seemed a lifetime.

“Should we start heading to the barks of the dogs?”

The Last Hunt

risingmoon.jpg

Like I mentioned in my earlier post, this is a short story I am working on. It’s unedited, so forgive any major mistakes. I’ll post it in chunks so it’s easier to read. Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I know this is a hunting site. So, where better to get opinions on a story revolving around hunting than here, from hunters. Thank you for humoring me and reading.

Yes, I Am Still Alive

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

nanowrimo.jpg

It seems to be getting more and more common for me to not make posts than it is for me to make them. I have to admit, I have been struggling quite a bit lately with the motivation to write. I thought that the changes and new additions I made may help me overcome it, but they didn’t.

I had a lot of posts either ready, or planned, and after looking at them, I either decided they weren’t that great, or that I couldn’t do them justice. I think that a lot of it has to do with the fact that I like to consider myself a writer, and that I have been struggling with whether I should or shouldn’t do that. I look at some of the things that I have written and I’m extremely proud of them. But most, I look at and all I see is a lot of rambling choked full of mistakes. And then I figure what’s the use in pretending.

Myth Busting

Monday, November 5th, 2007

mythbusting.jpg

Hunting has its share of myths, legends, and tall tales. Some of them are hard to discern as such because they appear legitimate and people take them at face value. So, over time, they pass from the realm of hearsay to that of fact, simply because they are so often presented as such.

Deer Camp Blog

Whenever I hear someone say that hunters a strange and funny group of people, I began wondering if they’ve paid a visit to the Deer Camp Blog recently. Those two words, strange and funny, are the perfect description for Rex’s site. In fact, I once made a comparison between it and the X-files, and Rex added it to the site: “This is the X-Files of the Hunting World”- Cliff.

Hallowe’en Pumpkin Carving

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

wolfjol2007.jpg

I’ve always enjoyed carving our Hallowe’en jack-o-lanterns, but have only started trying to do more complicated designs the last two years. Last year I did a design with RJ the raccoon from Over the Hedge. This year I decided to go with a pair of wolves in a wooded setting. Unfortunately, I haven’t discovered a way to get a really good picture of a lit pumpkin yet, so the one above looks a bit blurry.
