From the Wife

The other day, I wrote the 12 tips for hunters. My mother-in-law, God bless her soul, sent me an email that had me laughing so much I had to share. Hopefully this will give you an inside look at Cliff…and maybe show you why he is the way he is.

NY Legislation Highlights Crossbow Prejudices

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Republican State Senator George Maziarz has reintroduced legislation seeking to make hunting with a crossbow legal in the state of New York. You would think that Mark O’Brien, a disabled Iraq War veteran who lost his right arm and leg in a rocket attack in Iraq in 2004 and would like to bow hunt again, proves to be a good example of why the laws should be changed, but that isn’t the case. The same ol’ rhetorical prejudices against crossbows have already reared their ugly head once again.

“Mostly the bow hunters don’t want crossbow users in their season, hunting their deer in their woods,? said long-time sportsman Bill Hilts Sr. “I always thought it belonged to all of us, but apparently not. The big objection is you can cock this. It takes away the challenge of pulling the bow back.?

12 ‘Honey-Don’ts’ For the Hunter – From the Wife.

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

A few tips for you hunters out there. Memorize them!

12. Do not love us up after a hunting trip until you’ve showered! – Seriously, you stink, and no, it doesn’t smell all ‘manly’.

11. Do your own damned laundry! – if your hunting pants stand up on their own, I ain’t touching them.

10. Handing us a bloody hunk of deer meat is NOT the same as bringing us flowers no matter how much you think it is.

My Worst Mistake

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Rex over at Deer Camp Blog did a post recently about The Worst Mistake, and then started a Meme for others to share their experiences about the big one that got away. I had been meaning to do a post for it for some time now, but couldn’t decide on which time to do it on. After a very scientific method of pulling one from a hat, I have finally nailed it down and I’ll now share it with you.

Hunting the Criminal Minds

Monday, May 7th, 2007

I’m a big fan of the CBS show Criminal Minds, but I was a little disappointed with the newest episode which originally aired on May 2. The episode was titled Open Season, and yes, it was about hunting and hunters. The blurb for the episode says it all.

The BAU is called to investigate after the bodies of missing people are discovered in a remote region of the Idaho wilderness. The gruesome find also leads the team to determine the unsubs have been hunting humans for sport.

Arkansas Hunters to Help in Shaping Deer Management Plan

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

The last time Arkansas reworked their whitetail deer management plan was in 1999. This summer, they will be reworking it again, and this time they’re asking for the help of hunters from around the state. If you live and hunt in Arkansas, here’s your chance to help shape whiteatail deer hunting for the next few years. Watch for the meetings and get involved.

Hunting Sense Blog Hunt #1

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Sometimes you see an idea that is just so good, you have to join in. That is how the Hunting Sense Blog Hunt came about. I first noticed something similar with Hunting Life’s The Outdoor Blogosphere Version 1 and then saw a variation with Outdoors with Othmar Vohringer’s The Blog Buzz #1 Edition. Basically the idea is to single out post from fellow outdoor bloggers that catch your attention or make you stop and think for a bit longer than you normally would. So here is my take on it with Hunting Sense Blog Hunt #1.

5 Ways to Scout on a Family Outing

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

It’s really hard to find time to do scouting sometimes when you need to be doing activities with the family instead. With time at a premium for most of us, and wanting home life to be a fun experience, it’s often times scouting that gets put on the backburner for another time. But what if you could do both?

Here are some ways to plan a fun family outing that will allow you to get in some much needed scouting at the same time. Whether you let your other-half know that this is what you’re doing is up to you, and I can’t be held responsible for any backlash that may be caused from it.

Hunting for the Horizontal

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Very seldom do you see a near perfect horizontal angle in nature. Sure, they can happen, but as rarely as it does, this fact can help you when trying to spot a deer or other animal in the woods. How you ask? Read on and I’ll explain.

With deer being naturally colored to blend into their surroundings, it can be difficult to spot a deer that is standing still. They disappear into the surrounding brown of the woods and unless they move, you may not even know they are there until it’s too late. A quick way to spot a deer in a situation like this is to use the shapes of nature to your advantage.
