$100 to possibly be on a DVD?
It’s simply amazing the things that you can run across when browsing the net. My latest find is ‘Weekend Warrior Outdoors‘, a company that produces hunting DVD’s with footage submitted by you, the hunter. Sure, having your hunt included on a retail DVD available to the masses sounds awesome, but what about the $100 membership fee that goes along with it?
Yeah, that’s what I thought too.
After discovering the site, I did a little digging to see what I could find out about the company. A simple Whois search revealed that the domain is roughly five months old, registered in August of 2006. A Google search also showed that David Knupp, a co-founder, is a member of the field staff at TheHuntZone.com. and provided a few references to co-founder Cory Ouellette in outdoor related topics.
The idea is one that is appealing, and could even be good, but the thing I have to wonder about is the membership fee that has to be paid to have your video footage considered to be a part of their DVD’s. As of now, the website section for the DVD’s is under construction and a search of the net turns up no products. It may be that they haven’t produced their first yet, but if they expect me to shell out that kind of money, I want to see the quality of their product before doing so.
They also say that every member will receive royalties from the sale of the DVD’s, proportionate to whether your footage is included or not. If so, that would be great, but again, there’s apparently no product as of yet to be receiving royalties from.
To me, it appears that the membership fee collected is what they are banking on to help finance this venture, if legit, which I have no idea whether it is or isn’t. That, though, is enough to make this country boy wary. If I wanted to pay to have my hunts put on DVD for sale, I could go to Lulu.com and pay $7.50 per disk to do it.
Don’t get me wrong, this could turn out to be a great concept and a great company, but as of now it just seems a little out there to me. What are your thoughts?

[…] Weekend Warrior Outdoors Founder Writes In February 5th, 2007 by Cliff I recently did a post on a website I ran across called Weekend Warrior Outdoors. Over the weekend one of the founders, David Knupp, read it and sent me a reply. Although I still believe the membership fee is high, his reasoning for it makes sense. I know his email has increased my interest in his company and venture, and I’ll be watching how it progresses. I wish him luck with it. […]
